Goodna Rugby Union Club
Goodna Rugby is a community based club that provides a safe and professional environment for children to come and enjoy themselves. Our young players are coached in a highly structured manner with an emphasis on developing motor skills and personal growth in a team environment.
Our junior teams play in the Brisbane Junior Rugby Union competition. Junior teams start from Under 6. While the junior age group play up to Under 17, we hope to enter teams in the Under 12, Under 13 and Under 14 grades, if numbers permit.
At Goodna Rugby Union we look to develop junior player skills ensuring that they have every opportunity to maximise their opportunities in our great game of rugby union.
In the last two seasons Goodna junior teams have started to make an impact in the competition with the club winning the Under 9 Division W Premiership in 2010 and the Under 12 Division 4 Premiership in 2011. This success is an indicator that development of our juniors is going in the right direction and shows that it can compete among the best junior teams in the BJRU. We are indeed fortunate that there is a pathway from the junior level through to senior level.
Success has also been shown off the field with Goodna Rugby Union winning the 2011 BJRU Patron's Cup. This award was presented in recognition of how the club and community banded together after the floods. It showed that despite the hardship, the community spirit is very strong in the club and it was this spirit that helped the club to achieve the success it did in 2011.
In the senior grade, Goodna has always been very competitive in Barber Cup and Pegg Cup competitions. The club won the 2008 premiership and played semi-final rugby in 2009 and 2010. While in 2011 the club struggled to finish the competition, there are high hopes that the club can be competitive again in the 2012 season.
If this grade is too much for you and you just want to play socially and have a bit of fun, there is our Veterans team who meet and play on a Friday night. Our Veterans are a special breed, they are hard, they are tough but they are the one team that know how to play fun rugby. If you're over 35 and are interested in playing the odd game let the club know.
At Goodna Rugby Union, we are a family club. Our club is a multi-cultural club with families from all ethnic backgrounds, including Maori, Samoan, Tongans, Niueans, Cook Islanders, New Zealanders, Australians, South Africans, and Sudanese. We have even been able to bring together extended families that would have otherwise passed each other on the street without knowing they were related.
Rugby is a great sport because it has brought our community much closer together. So if you are new to the area or are looking for a new club or something different, then give Goodna Rugby Union a go. You will be most welcome to join to our family.
